The article highlights the essence of the openness of the economy, identifies its basic conditions and the main tools of support (achievement). It is noted that the degree of openness of the national economy is determined by a system of macroeconomic indicators that are subject to comparison. Based on the analysis of the main indicators of Ukraine’s foreign economic activity, an assessment of the current state of openness of the national economy of Ukraine in terms of exports and imports of goods and services. The geographical and commodity structure of foreign economic activity of Ukraine is characterized.
\nIt is determined that in the first half of 2020 the indicators of Ukraine’s foreign economic activity decreased slightly compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The main reason for this situation, according to the authors, is the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, which directly affected total world trade. In general, based on the assessment, it is proved that in the current conditions of political and economic instability, the openness of the national economy of Ukraine remains at a fairly high level. This makes it closely dependent on changes in external conditions. It is generalized that the openness of Ukraine’s economy for its socio-economic development is important. It has been proven that openness alone is not a sufficient condition for accelerating economic growth. It is interlinked with institution-building measures, due process and political stability, and must be accompanied by macroeconomic stability. Therefore, it is important to take advantage of openness with the simultaneous development of financial and political institutions.
