Shipping by sea should not only be fast and of high quality. It should be economically beneficial for all interested parties, primarily for the ship owner and charterer. The safety of navigation is one of the components of the commercial efficiency of transportation. The article considers the current problems of commercial operation of ships in maritime transport and shipping safety, as well as the causes of increased accidents due to human influence. The aim of the article is to analyze the current causes of emergencies at sea and find effective ways to reduce them, minimize commercial transportation costs by improving the management of marine resources. The work revealed positive dynamics in improving the safety of all types of vessels; revealed a decrease in the number of lost ships, dead and injured crew members in the period from 2014 to 2019, which generally had a positive effect on the commercial component of maritime transport. The main causes of accidents are analyzed on the basis of EMSA statistics. It is established that the main reason for the increased accident rate and increased commercial costs is the human factor. As a result of the unskilled work of the ship’s crew, shipowners and charterers suffer colossal losses. The classification of accidents caused by human factors is considered. International organizations dealing with safety of navigation and international conventions according to which merchant ships are currently inspected have been established. The article proves the dependence of shipping safety on the competent management of marine resources, as the influence of the human factor, of course, is the main cause of accidents in the fleet, which leads to inevitable losses from the commercial operation of ships. Improving the skills of ship’s officers and shore operators involved in the ship’s propulsion operations is a necessary condition for reducing accidents and improving the financial efficiency of the fleet.
