Timely and full implementation of Ukraine\u2019s international obligations in the energy sector is the necessary condition for Ukraine\u2019s membership in the European Energy Community, as well as the driving factor for sustainable energy development. Expanding access to capital, strengthening the fight against corruption, increasing transparency in the energy sector, strengthening control by the energy regulator over the investment programs of energy companies, and the central executive body in the field of environmental protection over the implementation of the National Plan of Emissions Reduction of Ukraine should be the prerequisites to sustainable energy development direction of ecologization and modernization through the transition to highly efficient environmentally friendly energy technologies. Power generation capacities running on fossil fuels, and especially on coal, form the main part of the ecological footprint of domestic energy sector. Ukraine’s international obligations in the environmental sphere require a reduction of such impact by almost 90% by 2029-2033. This requires the installation of capital-intensive treatment equipment at most of the power units of TPPs and CHPs in Ukraine. TPPs cover half-peak and significant part of peak daily load of the integrated power system, as well as participate in primary and secondary regulation of frequency and power, their stable operation is a guarantee of reliability of united power system of Ukraine, and according to the action plan for integration of the united power system of Ukraine with ENTSO -E, the modernization of such power units and their participation in the market of ancillary services is a necessary condition for integration with the European energy system. Identifying the environmental challenges of energy transitions in Ukraine and adjusting energy and environmental policies accordingly aims to accelerate the implementation of commitments to the European Energy Community and the convergence of energy markets in Ukraine and the EU.<\/p>\n
