The global chemical industry is one of the key ones. For many countries, it is the basis of economic development and growth (as an industry that creates innovative substances and materials). In addition, the chemical industry is the basis for many other industries as well as agriculture. Today, the chemical industry is one of the most innovative and contributes to solving societal problems, including climate change, health and nutrition. Thus, we can state that the chemical industry is important for the formation of countries’ economic security and their innovative development. The aim of the article is research of the chemical industry in the world and in Ukraine. In the article the analysis of the world and Ukrainian chemical industry is given. Sales of chemical products by 10 leading countries in 2018 are determined. The level of R&D expenditures in the chemical industry in different countries of the world in 2008 and 2018 is established. The import-export activity of the countries-participants of international trade and Ukraine is presented. A comparative description of the main indicators of the chemical industry for Ukraine and other countries is done. The results of this study determine the expediency and perspective directions of Ukrainian chemical industry development.
The chemical industry is one of the leading in the world. In addition, it not only helps to increase the innovative activity of countries, but also has a huge impact on the formation of their economic security. The Asian chemical market has the largest share, mainly due to China, which is a world leader. The second place is occupied by the European market, and the third – the North American market.
In addition, the chemical industry requires high R&D costs. China is also a leader in R&D spending. In 2018, its expenditures accounted for almost a third of all global R&D expenditures.
Despite the crucial importance of the chemical industry for Ukraine, compared to other countries, Ukraine has much worse indicators: lower sales of industrial products; fewer companies operating in the chemical industry; lower R&D costs.
Further research will concern the identification of trends in the further development of the chemical industry in Ukraine and the world.
Keywords: chemical industry, chemical products, innovation, export, import.
